Functional medicine has long been known to have certain advantages when it comes to diseases like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and adrenal fatigue. Using a non-invasive and holistic approach, functional medicine has proven very successful in treating a range of different illnesses.
But just how successful are we talking? And what are the odds that functional medicine can treat your condition effectively?
In this post, we discuss the success rate of functional medicine and explain why it could be the right avenue to treat your disease:
Functional Medicine Model is Associated with Improvements in Health-Related Quality of Life – Cleveland Clinic Study
Non-profit academic medical centre in the US, Cleveland Clinic, is consistently ranked as one of the top hospital systems in the US and the world. It ran a study on the effectiveness of functional medicine in improving quality of life of patients.
The two-year study examined 1,595 patients treated in Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Functional Medicine and 5,657 patients seen in primary care at a family health centre, assessing health-related quality of life using PROMIS®, an NIH-validated questionnaire.
Approximately 31% of patients seen by the Center for Functional Medicine upgraded their PROMIS global physical health scores by 5 points or more; this is a clinically meaningful change and translates to a noticeable positive effect on daily life.
They also ran the same study on a group of over 5,600 patients seen in the Cleveland Clinic family health centre – a regular medical clinic with GPs. IN contrast, only 22% of these patients improved their PROMIS scores by 5 points or more. This study shows that a significantly higher number of patients found major health improvements in functional medicine treatment as opposed to primary healthcare treatment.
Is functional medicine effective?
In short, yes – functional medicine is very effective for problems such as IBS, SIBO, fibromyalgia, adrenal fatigue and others. Does it have a 100% success rate? Sadly, no – but there is no medicinal practice that does. And if a certain practitioner is telling you otherwise, this should raise some serious questions.
