How do you Fix Adrenal Fatigue?

fatigue

Do you constantly feel fatigued, day after day?  Maybe you also suffer from irregular moods, brain fog or often get sick?  You may be suffering from adrenal fatigue, which occurs when your body generates too much cortisol hormone.  The bad news is that there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to fixing adrenal fatigue.  But the good news is that an expert naturopath and functional medical practitioner may be able to help you restore some balance in your body and reduce your adrenal fatigue symptoms.

Treatments for adrenal fatigue

An expert naturopath and functional medical practitioner is the best port of call to both diagnose and develop a tailored treatment plan to deal with your adrenal fatigue.  There are many different options that may be recommended, but below are a few possible tips and treatments if you are diagnosed with adrenal fatigue.

1. Follow an adrenal diet

Your expert naturopath and functional medical practitioner will be able to provide a full and individualized diet plan, but there are a few basic principles to the adrenal diet.  The diet focuses on lots of colourful vegetables, lean protein and whole grain carbohydrates.  Things to limit or exclude from your diet include white sugar, white flour, processed foods, fried foods, artificial sweeteners and soft drink.

2. Stay well hydrated

Staying hydrated may not only help manage your adrenal fatigue, but it is good for your overall health and wellness in general.  According to the Australian Dietary Guidelines, women should consume about 2 litres of fluids a day, while men should aim for about 2.6 litres of fluids per day.  Pregnant or breastfeeding women and those who are more active than the average person will require higher fluid intakes than this.\

3. Find a better bedtime routine

Humans have Circadian Rhythms – or an internal ‘body clock’ – which regulates everything over each 24-hour period based on the light-dark cycle.  To help fix adrenal fatigue, you need to ensure you don’t throw this cycle out of whack.  Try to make sure you are getting to bed before 11pm and aim for between 7 and 9 hours of sleep each night.

4. Exercise more

Exercise is good for the body in many ways and can also assist in fixing adrenal fatigue.

If you are suffering from adrenal fatigue, you don’t want to overdo it with prolonged high-intensity exercise which may cause even more adrenal stress.  However, lower-level cardiovascular training can be highly beneficial in reducing cortisol levels.

5. Take some supplements

It is essential to consult an expert naturopath and functional medical practitioner before taking any new supplements.  However, there are some supplements that they may recommend to help fix your adrenal fatigue, based on your individual circumstances.

These could include B vitamins, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Magnesium and Zinc.

There are also some other specialised supplements and proven herb-based tablets that you could be recommended.
